Meine War Memories Volume III: Recovery, Retreat, and the Road West concludes the firsthand World War I writings of Max Deike, a non-commissioned officer in the Prussian Army serving on the Eastern Front from 1914–1917.Preserved across generations in original handwritten booklets, these memoirs continue through the later hardships of war — long occupations, severe winters, military uncertainty, recovery in hospitals, retreat, and the emotional strain carried by those living through the conflict day by day. Serving near the front lines as both a clerk and courier, Max Deike recorded not only military events, but also the quieter realities of wartime life: exhaustion, routine, humor, isolation, hardship, and the small moments of humanity that endured even during prolonged conflict.Written while the war was still unfolding, these accounts preserve the perspective of an ordinary soldier witnessing extraordinary historical events in real time.
